Video Enhanced Reflective Practice

About Video Enhanced Reflective Practice

Video Enhanced Reflective Practice (VERP) is a tool for professional development designed to enhance interactions in a professional context  through structured video-based reflection sessions.

By reviewing short video clips of their own practice, participants identify strengths and areas for growth, setting personal goals for improvement. These clips are then shared either one-on-one or within group sessions for deeper analysis and reflection.

VERP is built on the same theoretical foundation and Principles of Attuned Interactions and Guidance as Video Interaction Guidance (VIG). Both approaches focus on strengthening relational skills by fostering meaningful reflection on successful interactions and guiding individuals toward positive change.

Applications of VERP

VERP has been successfully implemented in various contexts, some examples include:

  • Special education – Boosting staff confidence in meeting complex needs.

  • Teaching Assistants/Support Workers – Facilitating interventions for emotional well-being and resilience.

  • Residential care – Strengthening positive relationship-building between staff and the people they work with.

  • Professional development – Developing authentic leadership skills.

  • Parenting support – Helping parents enhance communication with their children.

  • Educational initiatives – Supporting the implementation of programs like Intensive Interaction, Speech and Language therapy, and literacy development.

  • Strengthening team work - Improving multi-disciplinary communication

  • Improving patient experiences - Supporting medical staff to engage and communicate effectively with patients.

How is VERP Delivered?

VERP training begins with an introductory group session led by an accredited VIG practitioner or supervisor. This initial workshop equips participants with foundational skills for reflection about attuned interactions in their own practice.

Following this, participants engage in a series of small-group shared reviews (or 1-1 sessions). They record short, usually five-minute videos, capturing interactions in their professional context. Before the shared review, they analyse their video using learned techniques to identify strengths. During the session, participants present their videos in a structured small group shared review  facilitated by a trained VIG practitioner or supervisor who has completed the VERP pathway.

The process concludes with reflection and evaluation, using reflective tools to assess progress in relation to participant's goals. Often, a final celebration session recognizes achievements and milestones reached throughout the VERP experience.
